11 Best Health Tips for Women

As women, we know that putting our health first should be a priority. But let’s get real. Life is busy and, like many things, making time to take care of our own needs is easier said than done.

Whether you’re a college student, a working professional, a stay-at-home mom, or are juggling a combination of these and other responsibilities, we know you only have so much time in a day. To help you incorporate practical women’s health and wellness routines into your schedule, check out the 11 best health tips for women below.

11 Women’s Health Care Tips

Being proactive about your health and making smart lifestyle choices will help you look and feel your best at any age. Practice these 11 health tips for women to increase your chances of staying healthy.

1. Eat a Diet Rich in Whole Foods

A nutritious diet filled with whole foods is essential for overall health, from brain health and skin health to heart health and more. Eat plenty of whole grains, high-fiber greens, and fresh fruits and vegetables. Choose leaner cuts of meat, fish, and poultry, and low-fat dairy products, keep processed foods to a minimum and limit your alcohol and sugar intake.

You may also want to take a multivitamin or certain supplements to ensure you’re filling in any nutritional gaps.

2. Exercise Regularly

Regular physical activity is beneficial for both your mental and physical health. Even just 20 minutes of exercise a day is great – the key is to be as consistent as possible.

In addition to cardiovascular activity, incorporate resistance exercises into your routine. Resistance training is important to support heart health, muscles health, bone health, and a variety of other health concerns.

You may also want to consider taking supplements to support your fitness goals as well.

3. Stay on Top of Your Annual Wellness Checks

No matter how busy you are and how great you feel, it’s important to resist the temptation to skip your annual wellness visits and health screenings.

4. Check for Breast Health

While it’s important for all women 40 and older to get screened, monthly breast self-exams can be helpful in between annual screenings. Self-exams can also be beneficial for women 20 and older.

5. Prioritize Sleep

Getting quality sleep consistently is extremely important for your overall health. Aim at getting at least 7 hours of sleep every night, going to bed at the same time every night, and waking up at the same time every morning. Creating a nighttime routine will help you get into good habits that support quality sleep.

6. Drink Enough Water

Drinking enough water each day has many health benefits, from increasing energy levels and helping you be more alert, to reducing fatigue and supporting your mood. While the amount of water you need to drink daily will vary based on your weight and other factors, most adults need to drink around 64 ounces of water a day.

If you’re not a fan of plain water, add freshly squeezed juice from a lemon, lime, or orange to your water bottle.

7. Work on Your Posture

Whether you’re hanging out with friends watching TV, studying for school, working at your laptop all day, or chauffeuring your kids around town, it’s all too easy to compromise good posture by slouching.

Slouching eventually leads to muscle strain and other problems. Give yourself a posture check at several points throughout your day and, when you find yourself slouching, correct your form by sitting up straight and standing tall.

8. Create a Morning Ritual

Get off to a great start each day by taking at least 10-20 minutes for yourself before starting on your to-do list. Play around with what types of activities best prepare you to tackle the day ahead, whether it’s reading, praying, journaling, meditating, listening to music – or a combination of a few things. You can also use this time to drink your first glass of water for the day and take a multivitamin, supplement, or probiotic.

9. Practice Sun Safety

Practicing sun safety is important to prevent excessive exposure to the sun’s harmful rays, which could cause skin damage. If you’re going to be outdoors for more than a few minutes, wear sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15, as well as a hat and sunglasses.

Also, regularly check your skin for changes in the size, shape, color, or feel of birthmarks, moles, or freckles, as well as new, pigmented, or red areas of your skin. If you notice anything suspicious, see a doctor immediately.

10. Take Care of Your Mental Health

Take time to slow down each day and do activities that relax you and bring you joy. While exercise, journaling, and meditation are great for mental health, making time for hobbies you love, such as gardening, painting, or baking, can do wonders for your mental state.

To complement these activities, you can also take vitamins and supplements that support mental health.

11. Maintain Close Relationships

Research has shown that social connections increase your level of happiness and your likelihood of surviving physical health problems. Make it a goal to prioritize the healthy relationships you already have with family members and friends. And it can’t hurt to also begin fostering new friendships!
