Dr. Audrey, Naturopath, Master Herbalist, and Senior National Educator at Country Life Vitamins, discusses the negative effects of blue light on our eye and skin health and what supplements to consider supporting eye health.
CLV: With all of us spending a lot more time in front of our computers and screens over the past year, we’re being exposed to more blue light than usual. What are some of the negative effects blue light can have on our health?
Dr. Audrey: We know blue light causes free radicals. Free radicals can be harmful to cells in the body.
CLV: What are some recommendations for how to support eye health?
Dr. Audrey: Lutein is one of the best supplements for eye health. There are different sources of lutein, but at Country Life Vitamins, we use clinically studied raw materials that have been shown to work – and at the dosages that have been studied.
Country Life’s Lutein contains the raw material Lutemax® 2020. Research has shown that Lutemax® 2020 supports shielding from blue-light and reduction of eye strain from prolonged use of devices and helps protect the eye and macula of the eye from oxidative stress.
If you’re looking to use lutein as an eye health supplement, look for a product that has the Lutemax® 2020 raw material because it has the right balance of lutein and zeaxanthin. These two ingredients work together to do the best job.
CLV: Do you suggest any supplements or vitamins for skin health?
Dr. Audrey: Verisol® Bioactive Collagen Peptides® are Type I and Type III collagen sources and are the premier choices if you’re looking to help reduce the depth of wrinkles and enhance skin elasticity. These are the main collagens found in the dermis layer of the skin. The dermis is the layer beneath the epidermis (the outer layer). While the epidermis is where wrinkles are visible, the breaking down of elastin and collagen fibers in the dermis is where wrinkles start.
There are a variety of things you can do to improve skin health. If you’re looking into taking collagen, getting the right kind is a must.
When there’s an increased production of free radicals in the skin without appropriate antioxidant defenses then collagen fibers may break down and you could get little crevices. That’s where the wrinkles start. You have to get the right type of collagen to help support the dermis level of collagen.
Bovine collagen is the most popular. It has Types I & III collagen and usually comes from the hide of cows. You want to look for grass-fed because it may have fewer chemicals.
You should consider getting a collagen product with Verisol®, a bioactive collagen peptide. Research has shown that in just 8 weeks, at only 2.5 grams per day, this collagen provides a 60% increase in the dermis level of collagen. (Individual results may vary.)
Maxi Skin Collagen + B-12 contains Types I & III Grass-Fed Collagen, Verisol®, and vitamin B12.
If you don’t want to take bovine-sourced collagen, you can look for marine collagen. Our Maxi-Marine Collagen contains marine fish collagen (from DNA-verified salmon skin), as well as Astaxanthin, an antioxidant that can work on the inside and outside of the cell.
What if you’re vegan or a strict vegetarian? Maxi-Skin Rescue is your answer. This vegan, fruit-based beauty product is sourced from French melon concentrate and grapeseed extract. Research shows it helps improve skin elasticity, gets rid of dark spots, lessens the dark circles under your eyes, and decreases reddish pink.
Dr. Audrey recommends taking Maxi-Skin Rescue even if you’re taking collagen because of the unique melon concentrate it contains.
Taking the proper supplements and vitamins for skin health and eye health can make all the difference, so be sure to take the time to do your research and get products made with ingredients backed by science.
