Ways to Support Your Mental Health

Over the last few years the discussions around mental health and challenges people face have become more open conversations than ever before. We have realized that mental health is part of our overall health and it’s alright to discuss challenges – almost as easily as it is to discuss heart disease or obesity. Well, perhaps not that easy but we have certainly made progress. And there are many resources available to guide individuals through the process of getting support. Let’s look at a few.

We have all heard of the National Institute of Health (NIH), but did you know that under the NIH agency there is NIMH (National Institute of Mental Health)? NIMH is one of the 27 agencies that make up NIH with a goal to provide research to help better understand mental function and mental challenges.

The NIH National Library of Health published their explanation of mental health as follows:

“Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act as we cope with life. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood…….”

Additionally, noted in the above publication, one of the ways to improve mental health is to take care of your physical health.  Here are some of their recommendations:

  1. Be physically active

We know exercise and physical activity is important but did you know it could reduce the feelings of stress and support your mood? Try to get 30 minutes of physical activity every day.

  • Get enough sleep

Having a regular sleep schedule makes it easier for you to get a good night’s sleep. The Mayo Clinic recommends adults get 7 or more hours of sleep each night.
