Managing Stress

What is stress?

Stress can be a noun or a verb, and we mostly look for answers to stress as the noun. One definition in the dictionary says stress is “a state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or very demanding circumstances”. Not all stress is negative – short term stress can actually boost the immune system and forces us to adapt. Fight OR Flight OR FREEZE reaction.  New job, big event, etc. However, when occasional stress exceeds our ability to cope it is considered negative stress (distress).

National Institutes of Health notes 5 things we all should know about stress

  1. Stress affects everyone
    1. It can be one time short term or repeated stress over a long term
    1. It can be routine stress from work, family, daily activities
    1. Sudden stress can occur from job loss, divorce or illness
    1. Traumatic stress happens as a result of an accident, assault or natural disaster
  2. Not all stress is bad
    1. It can help you flee a life threatening situation
    1. It can motivate you
  3. There are ways to manage stress (exercise, relaxing activities, setting priorities, dietary changes, supplements, etc)
  4. If you’re overwhelmed by stress ask for help

Some nutrients to support managing occasional stress

  • B-Vitamins
    • Found in dark leafy vegetables, broccoli, meat, poultry, eggs, dairy, seeds, nuts, legumes, and whole grains or in supplements
  • Ashwagandha
    • An ancient adaptogenic herb popular in Ayurvedic practice and found in many supplements that support stress response

Additionally, emerging research is indicating the correlation between gut (intestinal) health and how it can effect the stress response. Keeping your gut healthy effects so many other functions in the body as well. Keeping the gut microbiome in balance and supporting the production of butyrate (the lining of the gut) should be a priority for all of us.
